Ecological store
Biedronka’s first ecological store has already been in operation since 2008. We have equipped it with the most modern solutions: ground-coupled heat exchanger, energy efficient light bulbs and refrigerators, and even automatically closing valves in the sinks. Thanks to this, we minimized the use of energy, water and production of waste. This pilot project shows the direction in which we want to develop. By the end of 2011, 6 ecological stores were opened and some of the solutions applied in them are also in force in other stores of the chain. At the moment we are intensively working on the project 2nd generation Ecostore.
Selective waste collection
Each Biedronka store is obliged to segregate waste. Light bulbs, tonners, foil and waste paper are recycled. Special containers can also be found in our offices. Only the waste that cannot be processed goes to the waste dump. The rest is recycled. In 2011, in this way, we retrieved 5,797.46 tonnes of foil, 105,253.86 tonnes of waste paper, 2,622.31 tonnes of wood and as much as 16.82 tonnes of batteries.
Ecology while shopping
As much as 60 million tonnes of plastic bags are used every year in the world. Decomposition of one may take as long as 500 years. That is why, as one of the fist retail chains in Poland, we have resigned from the use of disposable plastic bags, and replaced them with reusable bags. Every customer may also bring unnecessary batteries and leave them in especially devoted containers.
Ecological education
We encourage not only our employees, but also our customers to change their habits to be more ecologically-friendly. Our information campaigns, with the use of posters and leaflets among others, convince readers that every one of us may care for the natural environment by segregating waste, limiting the use of water and electricity, as well as using reusable bags. In the “Kropka TV” weekly we often publish “Biedronka’s Green Page” devoted to topics connected with ecology.
